Download Google Chrome for iPhone and iPad
Google Chrome is free on the App Store and works on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. It is the official Google app, and it syncs your bookmarks, passwords, autofill, and open tabs with Chrome on every other device you sign in on. The same app installs on both iPhone and iPad. There is no separate iPad version and nothing to pay for.
System Requirements for iOS
- OS: A current or recent version of iOS or iPadOS (the App Store automatically installs the newest version your device supports)
- Devices: iPhone, iPad, iPod touch
- Storage: About 200 MB for the app
How to Install Chrome on iPhone and iPad
- Tap the App Store button above
- Tap Get, then confirm with Face ID, Touch ID, or your Apple ID password
- Wait for the download, then tap Open
- Sign in with your Google account to turn on Sync (optional, but recommended)
Can I Get Chrome Without the App Store, or as an APK?
No, and you do not need to. iPhone and iPad install apps only from Apple’s App Store, and APK files are an Android-only format, so a “Chrome APK for iPhone or iPad” does not exist. Chrome is completely free on the App Store, so there is no reason to look anywhere else. Tap the button above, tap Get, and you are done.
Why Chrome on iOS Uses WebKit
Apple’s App Store rules have historically required all browsers on iPhone and iPad to use WebKit, the same engine that powers Safari. That means Chrome on iOS renders pages with WebKit rather than Blink (the engine Chrome uses on every other platform). For most users this is invisible. Page compatibility, JavaScript performance, and security are roughly the same as Safari.
In the European Union, Apple now permits alternative browser engines under the Digital Markets Act. Outside the EU, all browsers including Chrome continue to use WebKit on iOS.
Set Chrome as Your Default Browser
You can replace Safari so links open in Chrome everywhere:
- Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad
- Tap Apps then Default Apps (or scroll down to Chrome directly)
- Tap Browser App and choose Chrome
From then on, links you tap in Mail, Messages, Notes, and other apps open in Chrome instead of Safari.
Sign In and Sync
Sync uses your Google account, not iCloud. Tap your profile photo in the top-right of Chrome and sign in. Once enabled, your iPhone shows the same bookmarks, password autofill, history, and open tabs as Chrome on your laptop. To make Chrome’s password manager available system-wide for autofill in other apps, open Settings > General > AutoFill & Passwords and turn on Chrome alongside (or instead of) iCloud Keychain.
Chrome Features on iOS
- Sync: Bookmarks, passwords, autofill, history, and open tabs across devices
- Voice search: Tap the microphone in the address bar to search by speaking
- Incognito Mode: Browse privately, with optional Face ID or Touch ID lock when reopening Chrome
- Google Translate: One-tap page translation
- Password Manager: Save and autofill passwords system-wide
- Home screen widgets: Quick search, recent tabs, and Lens shortcuts
- Lens: Search what’s on screen with the camera or a photo
Lockdown Mode and Chrome
Chrome runs in iOS Lockdown Mode and respects all of its restrictions: complex web fonts and most JIT-compiled JavaScript are disabled, which means some sites will look or behave differently. This is by design and applies to every browser on iOS.
Stage Manager and Split View on iPad
Chrome supports iPad multitasking. Use Split View to put Chrome side by side with another app, or pin Chrome in Stage Manager for a desktop-style window. Multiple Chrome windows can be open at once and each shows in the App Switcher.
Chrome vs Safari on iOS
Both browsers use the same WebKit engine outside the EU, so site rendering and battery life are very close. The reason to pick Chrome is the Google account: your bookmarks, passwords, and open tabs follow you to every other device including Android, Windows, Mac, and Linux. Safari’s equivalent only spans Apple devices.
Update Chrome on iPhone and iPad
Chrome updates through the App Store automatically. To check manually, open the App Store, tap your profile in the top-right, scroll down to find Chrome, and tap Update. See our update guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Google Chrome free on iPhone and iPad?
Yes. Chrome is completely free on the App Store. There is no paid version, subscription, or in-app purchase to download or use it.
Can I download Chrome on an iPad?
Yes. The same Chrome app works on iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch. Open the App Store, search for Google Chrome or tap the button above, and tap Get. There is no separate iPad app to find.
Is there a Chrome APK for iPhone or iPad?
No. APK files are for Android only. iPhone and iPad install apps exclusively from the App Store, where Chrome is free. Any site advertising a “Chrome APK for iOS” is not legitimate, so avoid it.
Does Chrome work on older iPhones and iPads?
Usually, yes. The App Store automatically gives an older device the most recent version of Chrome that it can run, so you can still install and use Chrome even if your iPhone or iPad cannot update to the newest iOS.
Is Chrome safe to download on iOS?
Yes, as long as you get it from the App Store. Apps there are reviewed by Apple and run in a sandbox. The risk only comes from third-party sites offering “Chrome installers” or configuration profiles, which you should never use.
Can I make Chrome my default browser on iPhone?
Yes. Open Settings, find Chrome (or go to Apps > Default Apps), tap Browser App, and choose Chrome. After that, links from other apps open in Chrome.
