Why Chrome on iOS Uses WebKit

Apple’s App Store rules have historically required all browsers on iPhone and iPad to use WebKit, the same engine that powers Safari. That means Chrome on iOS renders pages with WebKit rather than Blink (the engine Chrome uses on every other platform). For most users this is invisible. Page compatibility, JavaScript performance, and security are roughly the same as Safari.

Since iOS 17.4 in March 2024, Apple permits alternative browser engines in the European Union under the Digital Markets Act. Outside the EU, all browsers including Chrome continue to use WebKit on iOS.

Set Chrome as Your Default Browser

Since iOS 14, you can replace Safari as the default for opening links:

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad
  2. Scroll down and tap Apps, then Default Apps (on iOS 18 and later) or scroll directly to Chrome (earlier iOS)
  3. Tap Browser App
  4. Select Chrome

From then on, links from Mail, Messages, Notes, and other apps open in Chrome.

Sign In and Sync

Sync uses your Google account, not iCloud. Tap your profile photo in the top-right of Chrome and sign in. Once enabled, your iPhone shows the same bookmarks, password autofill, history, and open tabs as Chrome on your laptop. To make Chrome’s password manager available system-wide for autofill in other apps, open Settings > General > AutoFill & Passwords and turn on Chrome alongside (or instead of) iCloud Keychain.

Chrome Features on iOS

  • Sync: Bookmarks, passwords, autofill, history, and open tabs across devices
  • Voice search: Tap the microphone in the address bar to search by speaking
  • Incognito Mode: Browse privately, with optional Face ID or Touch ID lock when reopening Chrome
  • Google Translate: One-tap page translation
  • Password Manager: Save and autofill passwords system-wide
  • Home screen widgets: Quick search, recent tabs, and Lens shortcuts
  • Lens: Search what’s on screen with the camera or a photo

Lockdown Mode and Chrome

Chrome runs in iOS Lockdown Mode and respects all of its restrictions: complex web fonts and most JIT-compiled JavaScript are disabled, which means some sites will look or behave differently. This is by design and applies to every browser on iOS.

Stage Manager and Split View on iPad

Chrome supports iPad multitasking. Use Split View to put Chrome side by side with another app, or pin Chrome in Stage Manager for a desktop-style window. Multiple Chrome windows can be open at once and each shows in the App Switcher.

Chrome vs Safari on iOS

Both browsers use the same WebKit engine outside the EU, so site rendering and battery life are very close. The reason to pick Chrome is the Google account: your bookmarks, passwords, and open tabs follow you to every other device including Android, Windows, Mac, and Linux. Safari’s equivalent only spans Apple devices.

Update Chrome on iPhone and iPad

Chrome updates through the App Store automatically. To check manually, open the App Store, tap your profile in the top-right, scroll down to find Chrome, and tap Update. See our update guide.
