How to Fix Chrome Font and Text Rendering Issues

If text in Chrome looks blurry, jagged or in the wrong font, the usual causes are a graphics acceleration problem, display scaling, changed font settings or an extension. Start with the quick fixes, then follow the steps for your operating system. For text that is only blurry, our blurry text guide goes into more detail.

Quick Fixes to Try First

1. Reload the page: Press Ctrl + R (Windows, Linux) or Cmd + R (Mac).
2. Reset the zoom: Press Ctrl + 0 (Cmd + 0 on a Mac) to return the page to its default size.
3. Clear Chrome’s cache: Select More (the three dots at the top right) > Delete browsing data, check Cached images and files, then select Delete data. See our clear browsing data guide.
4. Test in Incognito mode: Extensions are usually off there. If text looks right in Incognito, turn off your extensions at chrome://extensions and turn them back on one at a time.

Windows Solutions for Chrome Font Problems

1. Toggle graphics acceleration: Go to Settings > System and turn off Use graphics acceleration when available (called hardware acceleration in older versions), then relaunch Chrome. Our hardware acceleration guide has more.
2. Update graphics drivers: Open Device Manager > Display adapters, right-click your adapter and choose Update driver.
3. Use the ClearType Text Tuner: Type “ClearType” in the Start menu search, open Adjust ClearType text and follow the steps.
4. Check Chrome’s fonts: Go to Settings > Appearance > Customize fonts and make sure the standard, serif, sans-serif and fixed-width fonts are ones you recognize. Resetting Chrome’s settings does not change fonts, so set them back here.
5. Check Windows display scaling: Microsoft’s text size help says to go to Start > Settings > Accessibility > Text size, select Display and choose an option next to Scale. Try the value marked Recommended.
6. Try a new Chrome profile: If fonts look wrong only in your profile, a new profile can show whether the old one is damaged.

macOS Solutions for Chrome Text Rendering

1. Toggle graphics acceleration: Go to Settings > System in Chrome and turn Use graphics acceleration when available off, then relaunch.
2. Check Chrome’s fonts: Go to Settings > Appearance > Customize fonts and check the fonts and minimum size.
3. Update macOS: Choose Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update.
4. Check display resolution: In System Settings > Displays, Apple says choosing Default under Resolution uses the best resolution for the display.

Linux Solutions for Chrome Display Issues

1. Install common fonts: Many sites expect Microsoft fonts such as Arial. On Ubuntu, run sudo apt install ttf-mscorefonts-installer.
2. Check antialiasing and hinting: Turn on font antialiasing in your desktop environment’s appearance or font settings.
3. Check installed fonts: Run fc-list | grep FontName to see whether a font is installed, and fc-cache -fv to rebuild the font cache.

Advanced Solutions for Persistent Issues

1. Reset Chrome settings: Select More > Settings > Reset settings > Restore settings to their original defaults. Google says this keeps your bookmarks and passwords, but it does not reset fonts.
2. Reinstall Chrome: Download the latest version and install it again.
3. Check for conflicting software: Font managers and other programs that change how text is drawn can affect Chrome.
4. Check extensions that change pages: Extensions that restyle sites or change fonts can make text look wrong.

Do not delete Chrome’s profile folder to fix fonts. That removes your bookmarks, passwords and history from the computer, and anything not synced to your Google Account is lost.
