Chrome Dark Mode on Android, iPhone and iPad

Chrome turns dark in a different way on each kind of phone and tablet:

• Android: in Chrome, tap the three-dot More menu > Settings > Theme, then choose Dark.
• iPhone and iPad: Chrome follows your device, so turn on Dark Mode in the iPhone or iPad Settings app under Appearance, then open Chrome.
• Windows, Mac or Linux computer: see how to turn on dark mode in Chrome on a computer.

Google calls the feature “Dark theme” on Android and “Dark mode” on iPhone, iPad and computers. Either way, it makes Chrome’s homepage, toolbar, settings and some other pages dark, as Google’s Dark theme help explains.

Android: the three Theme choices

In Chrome, go to More > Settings > Theme. Google describes the options this way:

• System default: Chrome is dark when your phone is set to dark theme, or when Battery Saver is on.
• Dark: Chrome is always dark.
• Light: Chrome is always light.

To make your whole phone dark, open the phone’s Settings app, tap Display and turn on Dark theme. Google’s Android dark theme help has the details.

Chrome turned dark on its own? If Chrome’s Theme is set to System default, Battery Saver can switch it to dark. Google notes that on some phones Battery Saver turns on by itself when the battery runs low. Choose Light in Chrome’s Theme setting to keep Chrome light.

iPhone and iPad: use the device setting

Google’s help for iPhone and iPad says to turn on Dark Mode on the device and then open Chrome. Apple’s steps, from Use Dark Mode on your iPhone and iPad:

1. Open the Settings app and tap Appearance. On older versions of iOS and iPadOS, tap Display & Brightness instead.
2. Select Dark.

To have it switch on in the evening, select Automatic and tap Options to set a schedule. You can also switch Dark Mode from Control Center: touch and hold the brightness bar, then tap Dark Mode.

Dark websites on Android

To show the websites themselves in dark colors on Android, you can try the experimental Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents flag, which shows websites in dark colors. Copy this address into Chrome’s address bar, set the flag to Enabled, then tap Relaunch:

Incognito is dark too

Google notes that Chrome may also look dark when you’re in Incognito mode, so a dark Incognito tab doesn’t mean your Theme setting changed.
